Mastery at the piano involves not only the knowledge and mechanics of playing the correct notes and rhythms, but also expressing the beauty and the story of the music. My goal for each of my students is to equip them with the music reading skills to play any piece of their choice with style and musicality for a lifetime of enjoyment.
My role is to be nurturing and supportive with honest yet positive assessment. I want to enable my students to become independent learners by training them how to listen, evaluate and make changes in their own playing. I teach students to use good practice strategies for efficient learning during at-home practice.
I provide a comprehensive music education through weekly private lessons, piano classes, recitals, festival and contest events. During private lessons, time is spent on technique exercises, and polishing repertoire into artistic performances and introducing new repertoire – with some time reserved for rotating and incorporating sight-reading, theory/ear training assignments, improvisation/composition activities, and ensemble work. Although an emphasis is placed on classical repertoire, the student’s curriculum is always tailored to the student’s interests and goals. Piano classes allow students to develop a stage presence and to gain confidence performing for peers; review of music fundamentals and music composers through games; and to build a spirit of camaraderie with other students. Each year we have a piano recital to which parents, relatives, and friends are invited. Playing in our recital is encouraged, but not mandatory. Please discuss this with me, if there is a problem in this area. Students who display good practice habits and enjoy taking on a challenge are encouraged to participate in area piano festivals and music contests.
Piano study cultivates not only a lifelong appreciation and love for music, but also so many important life skills – including creativity, concentration, commitment, discipline, and perseverance. Parents are encouraged to be actively supportive and engaged in their students’ musical training.
I believe it is my obligation to continue developing as a musician and teacher throughout my career. I make it a priority to practice regularly, serve as an active member in professional music teacher organizations, attend conferences, and stay informed about current piano pedagogy trends. I strive to keep my teaching exciting and engaging using new repertoire, music games and teaching strategies.
Together, my students and I find great satisfaction and enjoyment sharing in musical adventures through piano study.
